10 ways to design a home office into your living room

I live in a 700 square foot one bedroom apartment, and my office and the living room blend together. My bedroom is fairly large and I can easily make room for my office there. I feel like it will help me mentally disconnect by being able to hang out in my living area without a constant visual queue of work in the corner. Your decor for your home office should be a piece of art you like, so that you don’t have a blank wall, a plant and perhaps one photo of friends or family. Currently, I keep a set of photo prints in a small wooden stand. I can cycle through the photos so that I feel like I always am looking at something fresh.

Small spaces are no longer an excuse for not treating yourself to a nice work space. This tiny office in Myka and George’s modern abode makes efficient use of little square footage and managed to create a comfy area to get work done. In smaller properties or homes where everyone is self-isolating, the bedroom might seem a smart location for some work.

How to Set Up a Home Office in a Small Apartment

The recommended width for an ergonomic office chair is between 12 to 19 inches. Armrests of an office chair must also be adjustable to cater to your comfort. Another way to incorporate an office area in the living room is to line up a workstation by setting up multiple desks on the wall. And if you want to define the space more, you can use the sofa as a divider to somehow separate and workspace from the living room.

If your guest bedroom is very small, you should substitute a bed for a convertible sofa, which doesn’t take much space yet gives enough sleeping space at the same time. As for the desk, it can be a windowsill or even a built-in one with built-in shelves. If the room is tiny, there’s no need to separate the spaces anyhow, and there are many combos that allow placing the bed and the desk very closely, the desk can be used as a nightstand. Many homes feature little nooks that can be customized in endless ways. A built-in desk with floating shelves is a relatively simple addition, even when incorporating details like recessed lighting into the shelving. Using the same wood from the floor on a feature wall elongates the space and makes the design feel more intentional.

Organizational Tools For Functional Space

Vases of flowers, framed photos, and sentimental objects make it feel personal and tailored. Stephanie from Casa Watkins Living converted an empty bedroom into a modern boho style inspired home office with tropical wallpaper, a red shag Moroccan-inspired rug, and plenty of built-in and display storage. You can help make a small home office feel bigger by using transparent furniture like a lucite desk or clear polycarbonate armchair. In this home office from Yael Weiss Interiors, the lucite desk reflects natural light from a nearby window, and a cowhide rug provides contrast and warmth. This little home office nook from Maestri Studio has a built-in desk, layered lighting, framed art, and wallpaper on the ceiling to make it feel tailored and integrated into the rest of the home. A quiet out-of-the-way space by the back door of this Miami carriage house bungalow is the perfect spot for a home office.

You can close the doors to reduce noise from other rooms and conduct sensitive calls in private, but the glass fronts don’t interfere with the open layout aesthetic. You can give a bland all-white space a big dose of personality with a few bold decor choices. The office portion of the room has black matte painted walls to define it, with two industrial style pendant lights hung over a communal work table so that family members can work together if desired. This small home office from JL Design is just big enough to house a comfortable desk and a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf complete with a ladder that functions like a mini home library. A white Jielde industrial desk lamp adds a fun vintage note that contrasts with all the rustic dark wood, and a sliding barn door provides privacy when needed .

Office Wall For Small Rooms

The floor-to-ceiling built-ins in this small room could make it feel confined, but a large double window gives light and opens up the space. The installation of glass-front doors allows the visual theme to continue while still creating a private area for important work calls. This standing open shelving and low-profile desk both feature powder-coated metal frames and simple stained wood surfaces, as well as a desk lamp with a cast iron base. While all of these furniture pieces feature elements that tie them together thematically, they aren’t overly-matched. One of the luxuries of working from home is the ability to incorporate more personal touches into your decor.

While a laptop can be closed and put away in seconds, any peripheral devices, pens, paper and notes, reports, etc., might take longer. This alone makes it an ideal space for producing competent, focused work. Realistically, however, it's potentially the busiest room in the house, with the sofa a magnet for family members.

Built-In Storage Desk

Home office in the bedroom is an idea which allows you to combine two different functional areas in one room. With the development of technology and communication many people take the chance to their work at home. People who work remotely, outside the office, often face the problem of adjusting their work process properly. In most cases, this is not due to the lack of such important qualities as discipline or responsibility, neither is wrong organization of time and schedule.
